One Simple Tip to Get Control of Your Business (and Life!)

by

Okay, you know those posts that are all over the place telling you they have One Simple Tip that will make you productive and it’s always something you have to buy from them and it’s got like 25 steps to prep and then will take 2 hours and MAYBE it will work, but probably it won’t because you don’t work exactly like them, or you aren’t in the same business as they are?

One Simple Tip :: ThePhotogsHelper.com

Yeah, this is not that type of a tip.

I’m not selling you anything and you can do this with things you have in your house. You probably have the items within reach of you right now.

Are you ready?

It’s called a Brain Dump and it’s super easy.

Step 1: Grab a writing utensil (pen, pencil, crayon – doesn’t matter. You can use your phone or computer, but the tactile process of hand writing has been shown to work better.)

Step 2: Grab something to write on (fancy planner, notebook, post-it notes….anything)

Step 3: Write. Spill out EVERYTHING that is in your mind. Work things. Home things. Random thoughts about your crush in 2nd Grade. Everything.

Step 4: Organize that list. This can be anything from highlighting in color coded pens to put things on separate lists or simple crossing off things as you get them done. It’s up to you.

Step 5: Be Productive!

Alas, the list will not get done itself. But if you’ve written down everything that is in your head, it doesn’t need to sit in your head anymore and you can actually think about what does need to get done!

I do it every morning while listening to music and burning a candle, while drinking my coffee. It is a great way to recharge after a good nights sleep. It lets me transition from the craziness of making sure everyone gets out the door on time and prepared, and into #bosslady mode.

Have you tried Brain Dumping? Does it work for you? How do you dump?

Share in the comments or on our Facebook page how you manage your list of things to get done!

I love all of our clients, but when my client starts out as a friend (and a dear friend at that) it makes it even better!!

This is Chana. She is one of the most beautiful souls I know. Her compassion and love for the world is unmatched. Additionally, she is a baker that is known for her caramel crack.IJU_6420Isn’t her family adorable? They are so sweet.

Anyway, back to the crack.IMG_7588 Kristen Carter Photography Sugar WoodThis is the deliciousness that she makes. It tastes just as good as it looks, I promise.

She offers two varieties right now, her sea salt topped caramel shortbread:3And the heavenly sea salt topped caramel bites: IMG_9997-10And not only have I had the honor to design her website and shop, but I also designed her boxes for her.SugarWoodBox8

I’m always proud of my work, but knowing that something I designed is being shipped all over the world and in shops too? There is definitely something special about that!

Do you have a project you need help with? Something you need designed, whether a website or packaging or anything random that you need help with? Contact us today! Let us help you get to the place of contentment!

Don’t Forget Yours

by

Christmas times come and it’s always a busy time for portrait photographers. Everyone seems to remember that they haven’t had a family portrait taken since last year and realizes they need something for their Christmas Card.

When you are so busy running around shooting everyone else’s families, don’t forget about your own! Whether you use a tripod with a timer or remote, have a photographer friend shoot you for trade or hire someone, get them done!

WPPI 2013 Recap

by

This is the third year I attended WPPI in Las Vegas and was pretty amazing. My first year, I had no idea what was going on and overbooked myself trying to do everything at once. It was still a wonderful experience though! The same for the second year. That year, I worked at a booth during the Expo so was standing and talking to people for three days straight. It was overwhelming in a whole different way.

Ready to fly! Just waiting on my flying buddy! #imkindofabigdeal #wppi #wppi2013 #pdx #airport #ibelieveicanfly

This year, I had my schedule to myself. I flew with the lovely and beautiful Kristina of Kristina Kathryn Brand Design and we stayed that night at the Air Force Base with the fabulous Amber (her assistant and friend) before driving to the strip.

Even got to indulge in coffee and some toddler snuggle time before leaving!

Hot coffee and Nick Jr with a little buddy this morning before embarking to the madness of #wppi. It's a good way to wake up in #vegas! #wppi2013 #morningcuppajoe

Our view is pretty spectacular for a regular room! #mgmgrand #vegas #wppi #wppi2013 #wideopenspaces

This year, in addition to the regular fun stuff, we also left the MGM hotel and even left the strip for a meal one night!

Dinner at Brio!

Dueling Pianos at New York New York was pretty amazing and a great excuse to get dressed up!

The classes were great this year too. My favorite speaker this year again was Elizabeth Messina – she is such a beautiful speaker, a wonderful photographer and has one of those souls that is divine. I wish I had gotten a better picture….alas, such is life!

The gorgeous @elizabethmessina after a beautiful talk. She is a great photographer, but I love, adore and am drawn to herself as a person. Her soul is beautiful. #beautiulpeople #ilovemylife

I even managed to get some work done! Being self employed means you are never really off duty but being able to hang out in the sun with a glass of wine in the middle of the day makes it easier to handle!

Living the high life. Working in the sun with a glass of wine. #thephotogshelper #workinghard #vegas #wppi #wppi2013

I cannot wait to see what next year will bring. Each year is so different and yet so comfortably refreshing! Even getting a bloody nose in the middle of Sue Bryce‘s class was worth it. I’m putting together a post of some incredible new vendors to tell you about too! I even brought home a bit of love from one of them for you guys!

I hope you have a glorious week!

Linky Love :: Five Free eBooks

by

Source: blog.bettyreddesign.com via Kathy on Pinterest

I love when someone gets something done before I do. I’m all about being able to share the love that someone else put together and even more so when it can share the love of five more amazing authors and bloggers. These five free ebooks will definitely be able to take you forward on your path to awesomeness.

The best part about this blog post by the AMAZING Betty Red is that all five ebooks are by women. Now, don’t get me wrong, I am not someone that thinks women are the only ones that can do something right. Instead, I know that women think differently then men. Unfortunately, with the history in this country of patriarchy it’s difficult for women to be taken seriously in some industries. Photography is not any different. If you look at any sort of photography history books or on a list of famous photographers, men will be featured fairly prominently. That is slowly beginning to change, but we can work on making that even more effective.

Take yourself seriously. Concentrate on presenting yourself as a professional business person. Now, this does not mean you have to wear suits every day (ha, I’m lucky if I’m wearing a bra…) or that you can’t be yourself, but instead just pause a moment before you do or say anything. No bad mouthing clients or vendors or anyone on your website, blog or Facebook. When you are presenting yourself to a client or potential business to work with, put together an actual packet and hand deliver it (you probably should at least wear a bra to that…). Smile when you talk to them, relax and be yourself. Your work is probably amazing, so present your personality and let them fall in love with you as you are. You are incredible, don’t forget that. I know that you can be yourself and professional at the same time.

It can be a delicate balance, but you can do it. You will be a better business person and professional when you realize that. Download these ebooks put together by Betty Red and take more steps to become incredible.

Tuesday Tip :: Call Me Maybe?

by

Or at least, a free chat!

Did you know I offer a free consultation?

callmemaybe

Have some things you need to work out? Just want to run ideas by an actual person or someone who knows the photography industry instead of a bored partner or friend.

If after the chat you are set for the year, that is totally fine! My ultimate goal for each of my clients is to have you not need me at some point in the future. I love being able to help photographers in the world and even though that’s not quite the best business practice, believe me when I say that this is what I believe!

So contact me and we can chat! I’d love to meet you! Email me and we can chat over FaceTime, Skype, Google+ or just a plain old telephone call!

It’s Not About Ideas

by

We’ve all had those ideas. The perfect prop that screams a special stylized session. An image in a magazine or Pinterest that inspires you to try something different.

However, all those ideas in your head don’t mean anything if you don’t do anything about it.

You are only as creative as the ideas you actually make happen.

This weekend, I’m making something happen. My inspiration is below…what do you think it might be?

Linky Love :: Stuck On You

by

Have you heard of Moo?

They are a printing company based out of the UK that has some pretty great options. Their business cards are famous because of the ability to have different images on the back of each card which allows you to carry your portfolio with you.

In addition to their business cards, they also have a variety of other products including stickers.

In my Reader today (I love Google Reader….do you use it?) I was notified of their sale on stickers!

How creative is this? It’s a sticker business card that they put on wood! These would look great on the back of canvases or prints that you sell or on creative bookmarks or maybe used to finish up your packaging! The options are endless!

Do you need new business cards and do you want an option for some awesome looking stickers to go with your branding? Use the code STICKYCARD when checking out and you can have a package of Rectangle stickers for half off!

Or even better! Do you currently have Moo cards? I’d love to see what you have created! Share with us on the blog or on Facebook!
