Everyone and every thing needs a support system. Bridges have braces, buildings have foundations…businesses need supports too. And when it’s a small business, the supports need to be larger and even stronger.
Especially as you are growing, you need to surround yourself with people, vendors and clients that you believe in. Nothing is worse than feeling you are alone in a journey. Most of the time, you will have to be working with people. There are the select few photographers that are able to make a living talking only to say, one or two people, but that’s rare. You will talk to someone constantly for many reasons, so why not make sure they are the people you WANT to talk to?
How many times have you had a client consultation and just felt that twinge in your gut, knowing that they weren’t right for you? Your instincts are screaming at you, telling you this is not a right fit. Guide them to another photographer! If it’s not working for you, you won’t be able to provide them with a product to be happy in. You’ll dread the session, not want to edit the images and really not want to meet with them for an ordering session. Why waste that time and energy not working with clients you want to?
And vendors! There is a reason there are so many labs and companies for photographers out there. Not every company is made for every photographer. Don’t print with a lab if you don’t like their products and customer service. You should not have to fight to talk to someone if you need to, or feel like screaming any time products arrive in the mail. Your business is your business and the printing is theirs. You should be getting exceptional service ever time and if you are not, fight for it or change labs. End of story.
Every image you share and every client you work with and every vendor you hire should work with you and for you and be perfect for what you are looking for.
