Tuesday Tip :: Muscle Memory

Do you have a system that you follow as soon as you walk in the door from a photo shoot? Every step you take should be part of your workflow, not just after you’ve gotten the images onto your computer!

I have a special spot for my bag and camera.  As soon as I walk through the front door with my camera in tow, I head straight for the office. Even with a two year old in tow, I have to get there.  If I don’t, who knows how long the images will stay on my card! So I make it into the office, take out the battery to charge and the CF card to load them onto my computer. As I remove the CF card, I put a fresh card in, so there is always a blank one in the camera and place the fresh battery in as well.  Then I place the camera in my bag on its special shelf (out of reach of the little munchkin/monster/spawn).
Detailed organized shelf

I clear off the card, saving them into a specially labeled folder under “To Be Processed” folder, always formatting the card after the images have been downloaded. Then, I put that card into it’s case and into a pocket.

Forget the images to work through, I now have everything ready to go for my next shoot. I don’t have to worry about if my camera has a card in or if the battery will die. It’s all going to be there and ready.

Do you have a workflow pattern for your physical items or do you end up running around like a chicken with your head cut off before you have a session, hoping that you have a battery or wondering if you have room on your card?
